A Simple Folksy Flower

Flowers are some of the easiest things to start with when you’re first (re)learning how to draw. Organic shapes are very forgiving, and once you get comfortable moving your hand around the page, there are endless petal and leaf combinations to try.

Here’s a really simple take on a folksy flower—you can create it in just a few quick steps:

  1. Start with an angled blob—it somewhat resembles a sideways 8.

  2. Add asymmetrical heart-shaped leaves—just remove the point at the bottom.

  3. Draw 5–6 petals. (Though as a middle school teacher, I can imagine a student insisting that 6–7 will be better. lol)

  4. Trace the shapes a second time to make an interior layer once all the petals are drawn.

And that’s it! Once you’ve tried one, play around—stretch the petals longer, overlap a few, or add tiny circles and lines to create texture. Try a whole page of different variations and see which one makes you smile. Remember, there’s no “right” flower here. The more you allow yourself try new things and embrace mistakes, the more your creativity will flow.
